Most people feel nervous when they step in front of the camera. “Where do I put my hands? Do I look awkward? Am I smiling too much?” Sound familiar? You’re not alone! The good news is that great photos don’t come from stiff poses. They come from feeling comfortable, confident, and a little bit playful.
As a professional photographer, I’ve learned that posing is less about perfection and more about creating movement and connection. When you book with me, I don’t focus on the perfect pose; I focus on the perfect moment, the movement, and the genuine feeling.
Embrace Your Authentic Self
Posing can be hard. It can be awkward. You basically have a stranger standing in front of you for an hour, directing you to do something that doesn’t feel... well, like you. Over the years, I’ve discovered that it’s not about standing straight and looking into the camera. The best pictures come from comfort, actions, and prompts.
Some call it editorial, romantic, poetic, or candid posing. I call it genuine. You are genuinely you in that moment. The laughter, the smiles, the looks—they're all real, and they’re all you! So, stop stressing about being perfect and start being genuine and authentic.
With all that said, let me help guide you to get that perfect shot. Below are some things I have come to cherish and hold true to my heart—things I’ve perfected in guiding my clients.
Couple Photos: Connection Over Choreography
Couple photos are about connection, not choreography. Forget stiff smiles; the magic happens when you interact with each other. Here are some of my favorite poses:
Forehead Touch: Gentle and intimate, perfect for showing closeness.
Walking Hand in Hand: Look at each other, not the camera, for a natural vibe.
The Almost Kiss (Kissing with Teeth): Lean in without touching—it creates gorgeous tension.
The Spin or Lift: Adds movement and laughter for candid energy.
Pro Tip: Whisper something silly to each other, like what you need from the store. The genuine laughs that follow are always the best shots.
Family Sessions: Playful Moments Matter
Family sessions can feel overwhelming—especially with little ones—but that’s part of the beauty! The best family photos come from play and interaction, not rigid posing. Here are some fun ideas:
The Group Hug: Everyone squeezes in tight—messy, but full of love.
Walking Together: Hold hands and let the kids lead the way.
Tickle Fight / Playing Tag: Pure, authentic laughter every time.
Layered Sitting: Parents on the ground or bench, kids on laps or shoulders for a balanced look.
Pro Tip: Don’t stress about perfection—kids running, laughing, or being silly often makes the most memorable photos.
Avoiding Awkward Habits
Even the best photos can fall flat if you’re stuck in awkward habits. Here’s what to avoid:
Locking your arms and knees (it makes you look tense).
Over-smiling or forcing expressions.
Facing the camera straight on with no angles.
Forgetting to breathe—your face needs to relax, too! (I like to tell my tense clients to close their eyes, take a deep breath, and when they’re ready, let it go and smile. You’d be surprised how relaxed you look!)
The Key to Natural Photos
The truth is, looking natural in photos isn’t about memorizing stiff poses. It’s about movement, connection, and trusting your photographer to guide you through the process. A few simple tweaks—like shifting your weight, interacting with loved ones, and letting go of perfection—can transform your photos from stiff to stunning.
If you’re planning your next session and want images that feel authentic, candid, and timeless, I’d love to capture them for you.
Let’s create something beautiful together! Whether it’s an engagement, wedding, or family milestone, I’m here to help you celebrate life’s cherished moments.
So, are you ready to step in front of the camera? Let’s make some magic happen!
